BEETHOVEN
AND PRICE

Opening Night

Welcome pianist Michelle Cann as she performs Florence Price’s Piano Concerto in One Movement. The Concerto evokes the composer’s experiences as a Black woman raised in the post-Civil War South. Experience references to spirituals, call and response, and the “juba” – a lively plantation dance that predates the Civil War in this impassioned Concerto. Paired with the Concerto is Beethoven’s powerful and triumphant Symphony No. 7. The rhythmical Seventh Symphony radiated such tremendous intensity and enthusiasm at its premiere that the audience was immediately won over and cheered for more. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony has remained popular ever since!

TCHAIKOVSKY’S
SIXTH

The Passionate Masterpiece

Tchaikovsky’s sixth and final symphony, the Pathétique, dramatically captures the spirit of life and the fullness of human emotion. Today, the symphony remains his most controversial work and continues to spark debate over 125 years after its composition. The evening also features the world premiere of award-winning composer Kati Agócs’ lyrical Horn Concerto written for and performed by the legendary principal horn of the Boston Symphony and international soloist, James Sommerville. The concert kicks off with the sensual dance music of Mexican composer Arturo Márquez in his Danzón No. 4.
