WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

God rest ye merry gentlemen,

Let nothing you dismay.

Remember Christ our Savior,

Was born on Christmas Day.

To save us all from Satan’s pow’r

When we were gone astray.

Oh tidings of comfort and joy

Comfort and joy

Oh tidings of comfort and joy.

From God our Heavenly Father,

A blessed Angel came.

And unto certain Shepherds,

Brought tidings of the same.

How that in Bethlehem was born,

The Son of God by Name.

O tidings of comfort and joy

Comfort and joy

O tidings of comfort and joy.

“It Came Upon A Midnight Clear”

It came upon a midnight clear

That glorious song of old

From angels bending near the earth

To touch their harps of gold

Peace on the earth, good will to men

From heaven’s all gracious King

The world in solemn stillness lay

To hear the angels sing.

“I Am So Glad Each Christmas Eve”

I am so glad each Christmas Eve,

The night of Jesus’ birth!

Then like the sun, the Star shone forth,

And angels sang on earth.

The little Child in Bethlehem,

He was a King indeed!

For He came down from heaven above

To help a world in need.

And so I love each Christmas Eve

And I love Jesus, too;

And that He loves me every day

I know so well is true.

Frosty the Snowman
was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal
Frosty the Snowman is a fairy tale, they say
He was made of snow
but the children know
How he came to life one day
There must have been some magic in
That old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around
Oh, Frosty the Snowman
Was alive as he could be
And the children say
he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

(ORCHESTRA)

Frosty the Snowman
Had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye, saying
“Don’t you cry,
I’ll be back again someday.”

Thumpety thump thump (UP)
Thumpety thump thump (DOWN)
Look at Frosty go (ALL)
Thumpety thump thump (UP)
Thumpety thump thump (DOWN)
Over the hills of snow! (ALL)

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas

Just like the ones I used to know

Where the treetops glisten

And children listen

To hear sleigh bells in the snow.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas

With every Christmas card I write.

May your days be merry and bright,

And may all your Christmases be white.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas (UP)

With every Christmas card I write (DOWN)

May your days be merry and bright (ALL)

And may all your Christmases be white.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,

It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth;

Long lay the world

     in sin and error pining,

‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,

For yonder breaks

     a new and glorious morn;

Fall on your knees,

     Oh hear the angel voices!

O night divine!

     O night when Christ was born.

O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Truly He taught us to love one another;

His law is Love and His gospel is Peace;

Chains shall he break,

     for the slave is our brother,

And in His name, all oppression shall cease,

Sweet hymns of joy

 in grateful chorus raise we;

Let all within us praise his Holy name!

Fall on your knees,

     Oh hear the angel voices!

O night divine!

     O night when Christ was born.

O night, O holy night, O night divine.

“Jingle Bells”

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way.

Oh what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh, hey!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way.

Oh what fun it is to ride,

In a one-horse open sleigh.

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh,

O’er the fields we go,

Laughing all the way.

Bells on bob-tails ring,

Making spirits bright.

What fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight, oh!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way.

Oh what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh, hey!

Jingle bells, jingle bells,

Jingle all the way.

Oh what fun it is to ride,

In a one-horse open sleigh.

“Joy To The World”

Joy to the world! The Lord is come

Let earth receive her King!

Let every heart prepare Him room

And heaven and nature sing

And heaven and nature sing

And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

“Hark, The Herald Angels Sing”

Hark! the herald angels sing

Glory to the newborn King

Peace on earth, and mercy mild

God and sinners reconciled

Joyful, all ye nations, rise

Join the triumph of the skies

With th’ angelic host proclaim

Christ is born in Bethlehem

Hark, the herald angels sing

Glory to the newborn King.

“Silent Night”

Silent night, holy night

All is calm and all is bright

Round yon virgin, mother and child

Holy infant, so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night

Shepherds quake at the sight

Glories streams from heaven afar

Heavenly hosts sing, alleluia

Christ the savior is born, he’s born

Christ the savior is born.

“Away In A Manger”

Away in a manger,

No crib for a bed

The little Lord Jesus

Laid down His sweet head.

The stars in the bright sky

Looked down where He lay,

The little Lord Jesus

Asleep on the hay

“Deck The Halls”

Deck the halls with boughs of holly

Fa la la la la, la la la la

‘Tis the season to be jolly

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Don we now our gay apparel

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Troll the ancient Yuletide carol

Fa la la la la, la la la la

“O Come All Ye Faithful”

O come, all ye faithful,

Joyful and triumphant

O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem

Come and behold Him,

Born the King of Angels

O come, let us adore Him

O come, let us adore Him

O come, let us adore Him

Christ the Lord!

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas

              and a Happy New Year.

Good tidings we bring to you

               and your kin;

We wish you a Merry Christmas

               and a Happy New Year.

Now, bring us some figgy pudding;

Now bring us some figgy pudding;

Now bring us some figgy pudding

               and a cup of good cheer.

We won’t go until we get some;

We won’t go until we get some;

We won’t go until we get some,

               so bring it right here.

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas;

We wish you a Merry Christmas

             and a Happy New Year.

(ORCHESTRA)

THE MIGHTY WURLITZER ORGAN

In 1927 the Rudolph Wurlitzer Organ Company of Chicago, Illinois delivered and installed a 3 manual, 13 rank theatre organ to the Sioux City Orpheum.  The organ was used to accompany Vaudeville shows and silent movies and later as prelude to the talkies.  It remained in use with diminishing frequency until about 1968.  After over a decade of disuse, the organ’s cause was taken up by a few concerned citizens including Dave Morgan and Dave Soelberg.  The Sioux City Women’s Club took on the task of saving the organ from destruction by neglect and the impending modernizing of the theatre.  A new home had to be found and it was decided the organ should go to the Sioux City Auditorium.  Chambers were constructed on either side of the stage and the arduous task of relocating the organ was begun.  Once completed, theatre organist Paul Quarino of Portland, Oregon was engaged for the opening concert.  In its new home, the Wurlitzer was used for concerts, hockey games, graduations, the circus, etc.

During the process of restoring the Orpheum, it was decided to bring the Wurlitzer home and a major donation in memory of Edna Pecaut helped to make that possible.  Rick Darrow had apprenticed with organ builder Lee Mcginnis during the move in 1970 and thirty years later Mr. Darrow’s company was contracted to restore and move the organ back to the theatre.  The organ was completely rebuilt and additional percussions and 8 additional ranks (sets) of pipes were added for a current total of 21.  Opening concert was by Lawrence Welk organist Bob Ralston.  Now back home at the Orpheum, the organ is used for concerts, weddings, graduations, Sioux City Symphony concerts, etc.

Today’s Organist is Dr. Jeremy Owens
